Sleep paralysis is not what you think; it’s a glitch in your brain’s operating system. Luckily, I learned a technique from a mentalist that stops sleep paralysis instantly and can help you reboot your brain from sleep paralysis. This ‘conscious recode’ is a simple trick that works by understanding how the mind works, not just the biology behind the experience.

What is Sleep Paralysis? A Glitch in Consciousness
Sleep paralysis is one of the most terrifying human experiences. You wake up, your mind is fully conscious, but your body is completely paralyzed. You might feel a heavy pressure on your chest or even see a shadowy figure in the room. For centuries, people explained this as a demonic attack. However, from a consciousness and neuroscience perspective, it’s a fascinating and harmless glitch between states of consciousness.
The scientific term for this is REM Atonia. During REM sleep, the stage where you have your most vivid dreams, your brain secretes a chemical that paralyzes your voluntary muscles. This is a brilliant safety feature. It literally prevents you from physically acting out your dreams. Sleep paralysis is simply a moment where your conscious mind wakes up before your brain has turned off that paralysis signal. Your mind is in the waking world, but your body is still in dreamland.
Why The Hallucinations Feel So Real
The terrifying part, the hallucinations, comes from your brain’s threat detection center, the amygdala, waking up in a state of confusion. It senses the vulnerability of being paralyzed and fills in the sensory gaps with its worst fears. This process creates that shadowy figure and the feeling of pressure. It’s not an external entity; it’s an internal projection.
I’ve seen this firsthand. In the ER, we had multiple patients brought in because of this experience. Doctors were usually astounded when I used a simple technique to help them, and they would wake up right away without any medical intervention. This is something I learned from studying mentalism, hypnotism, and NLP, which focus on how the mind works… a vital piece of information often overlooked in medical school.
How to Reboot Your Brain from Sleep Paralysis
Here’s what you can do when you find yourself in this state, or if you find someone you know in this state. You would know they are in sleep paralysis if they appear to be asleep but you are unable to wake them, while their vital signs are completely normal. The key is not to fight it, which only creates more fear. The key is to reboot the system.
Please remember, this is for informational and entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. If you’re ever worried, please take yourself or the person to a doctor first.
Step 1: Focus on the Periphery
Don’t try to move your big muscles. Your arms and legs are offline, and trying to move them will only increase panic. Your brain’s paralysis signal is weakest at the very edges of your body. So, focus all your conscious intention on wiggling one small toe or one small finger. Say to yourself, or to the person you are helping, “You are not alone, you are safe.” This tiny voluntary movement is often enough to send a reboot signal back to the brainstem, telling it that you are awake and to turn off the Atonia signal.
Step 2: Use a Conscious Recode
If focusing on a small movement doesn’t work, there is a next step. You can perform a conscious recode. Say to yourself or the person you are helping the following words. Remember to always breathe throughout this process.
- Identify the Consciousness: Say their name (or your name) out loud. This connects the consciousness with the current experience.
- Set the Intention: Say, “It is time to fully be present. Now I am going to count to five, and as I’m counting, each and every muscle in your body will come back to full function. On the count of five, you’ll be fully awake, alert, and able to move easily and freely.” This sets up the conscious recode.
- Begin the Count:
- One. Begin to feel every muscle in your body. Send a signal to fully work and move now.
- Two. Allow every single muscle, fiber, and tissue in your body to feel what it feels like and remember what it feels like to fully work and move now.
- Three. Notice how you can begin to move your eyes and your arms and your legs fully now.
- Four. Notice how you can open your eyes and move your arms and your legs fully and easily now.
- Five. You are now fully able to open your eyes, move your arms and legs, and sit up and be fully awake.
- Give Final Prompts (if needed): Say, “Open your eyes because you can choose to do so. You are in control, and you are completely capable because you can choose.”
Beyond Paralysis: Coding Your Biology
This process alerts and reminds your consciousness that you have the power to choose. You are not being attacked. You’re simply witnessing a beautiful, strange glitch in the source code of your consciousness and the supercomputer we call the human body. This simple count-out procedure is similar to techniques used in hypnosis, where the body can enter a similar state known as the Esdaile State.
This technique doesn’t just work for sleep paralysis. You can code your biology for anything that you choose to experience. I used similar principles to overcome two chronic conditions I used to have.
