Many believe that anxiety is a thinking problem, but what if you’re not overthinking and your system is just dysregulated? I recently tried a 2-minute ‘state shift’ for anxiety that wasn’t meditation, and it actually worked. The core idea is that anxiety is a ‘state problem,’ which means you can’t think your way out of it; you must regulate your system to find balance.

Why You’re Not Overthinking, Your System Is Dysregulated
Anxiety is fundamentally a state problem, not a thinking problem. Most people attempt to solve anxious thoughts within their minds, but this approach often fails because the root cause isn’t the thoughts themselves. Instead, it’s a dysregulated nervous system. Shifting your physical and energetic state is the key to managing anxiety effectively.
Most people try to solve anxiety in their minds, but anxiety isn’t a thinking problem. It’s a state problem.
This simple recalibration exercise is not meditation. It is a direct and powerful technique designed to create a state shift. The entire process takes under two minutes. Remember, you are in control, and your system will only allow what it feels safe enough to experience. If you are in a comfortable space, let’s begin. If not, feel free to save this for later.
A 2-Minute State Shift to Recalibrate Your System
This guided exercise will help you shift your state from anxious to regulated. The goal is not to force relaxation but to allow your system to find its own balance. Follow these steps at your own pace to experience a powerful shift in your state of being.
- Settle Into Your Breath
Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your breath. Do not try to change it; just notice its natural rhythm. Take a slow inhale through your nose and a gentle exhale through your mouth. - Anchor with Intention
As you continue breathing, silently say to yourself, “I’m here” on the inhale, and “I’m safe” on the exhale. Repeat this cycle five times at your own pace. - Notice Your Body
Now that you have settled into your breath, bring your awareness to your physical body. Gently scan yourself and notice where you might be holding any tension. There is no need to fix it; simply notice it. - Deepen Your Awareness
Open your eyes for a moment, and then close them again. As you close them, allow yourself to drop even deeper into your awareness. - Receive Your Regulation Anchor
Bring your awareness to your chest and just feel. Let go of any story or analysis. In the next few moments, your system will give you a signal. It might be a word, a feeling, or a simple knowing. This is your regulation anchor. - Return to the Present
Take one final deep breath in and out. Slowly come back to your surroundings. Move your hands and your body gently, and when you are ready, open your eyes.
You are not trying to relax. You are allowing your System to Recalibrate.
The Power of Shifting Your State
In less than two minutes, your entire state just shifted. This simple exercise highlights the profound difference between trying to think your way out of anxiety and actively regulating your system. When you focus on shifting your state, you address the root of the issue instead of getting lost in a cycle of overthinking.
If you felt that shift, you experienced the power of regulation. This is just one of many ways to connect with your inner world. Frequently Asked Questions
Is this state shift exercise a form of meditation?
No, this is a state shift, not traditional meditation. The goal is to actively recalibrate your nervous system by focusing on physical and energetic awareness, rather than trying to empty your mind of thoughts. It is a direct intervention to change your state of being.
What is a regulation anchor?
A regulation anchor is a signal from your system that arrives when you are in a state of receptive awareness. It can manifest as a specific word, a feeling, or a deep sense of knowing. This anchor serves as a touchstone for your regulated state.
What if I don’t feel a shift right away?
Your system will only allow what it feels safe to experience. You are always in control of the process. If you don’t feel a significant shift immediately, that is perfectly okay. Trust your body’s wisdom and try the exercise again when you feel ready to drop in.
