When your first chakra, your root chakra or safety center, senses danger, it immediately tells the adrenals to initiate a fight, flight, or freeze response. This floods your system with cortisol and adrenaline. This process is the biological activation of a survival program.

Herein lies the problem. Your ancient biology was designed for acute, infrequent threats. For example, if you lived in the wilderness and a lion approached you, your system would react with a powerful, short-term stress response. However, modern life presents a different kind of threat. It runs 24/7 as a low-grade, chronic threat system. We worry about our bank accounts, deal with a toxic boss, or navigate difficult relationships with family, friends, or partners.
We are constantly living in the energy of “it is not safe.” As a result, your root chakra gets stuck in the “on” position. It is constantly signaling threat, threat, threat. Try this body key right now to send a new message to your system.
- Rub your hands together vigorously until they feel very nice and warm.
- Place your warm palms on your lower back, right over your kidneys where the adrenal glands are located.
- As you do this, lean back slightly and feel the support of your hands holding your back.
- Close your eyes and breathe deeply into your hands. Imagine sending the air down your arms and into your palms.
- With each exhale, make a low humming sound. Feel the vibration resonate through your hands.
By doing this, you are sending a direct vibrational signal of safety, calm, and “all is well” to your adrenal glands. For the first time, you are consciously telling your body’s protectors that they can rest. You are supported, and you are safe.
