My body is constantly in ‘fight or flight’ because of something called neuroception, and I’m learning how to signal safety back to it. This process is key if you often feel an unexplainable sense of unease. Learning how to signal safety to your nervous system is a practice that can create profound shifts in your daily life by communicating directly with the oldest parts of your brain.

What Is Neuroception?
Neuroception is your nervous system’s subconscious process of detecting risk and safety in your environment. This automatic assessment happens in the most ancient parts of your brain, completely bypassing your logical mind. It is an invisible sense that is constantly scanning your surroundings for subtle cues that answer one critical question, is this safe?
This is precisely why you can experience a sudden, unexplainable sense of unease or a feeling of profound calm around certain people or in specific places. Before you’ve had a single conscious thought, your body has already picked up on subtle cues like tone of voice, body language, and the energy of a space. It makes a judgment long before your conscious mind does.
Before you’ve even decided if you like a person or a place, your body has already made its decision. Neuroception is an invincible sense running 24/7 in the background of your awareness.
How Past Experiences Keep You in Fight or Flight
Your nervous system can be conditioned by past experiences to perceive risk everywhere, even in safe situations. If past events have taught your body that the world is a dangerous place, it will keep you in a persistent state of fight or flight. This subconscious programming can sabotage opportunities for connection, love, and abundance simply because your body deems them unsafe.
To truly change your life, you must first change what your body perceives as safe. This requires learning to speak its language. When you feel that unexplained anxiety bubble up, it’s a signal that your body has detected a potential threat. Your role is to become the conscious leader in that moment and actively signal back that you are safe.
A Simple Practice To Signal Safety To Your Nervous System
You can use a simple physical practice to send a direct signal of safety to your nervous system. This technique involves gentle pressure and slow, deliberate movement to stimulate your vagus nerve, which is the main highway of your body’s safety and relaxation system. This exercise helps you become the conscious leader of your physical state.
- Gently place your right hand on the left side of your neck with a soft palm.
- Slowly turn your head to the right, as if you are looking over your shoulder.
- Hold this position for about 30 seconds while breathing slowly and deeply.
- Return your head to the center and then repeat the process on the other side. Place your left hand on the right side of your neck and slowly turn your head to the left.
This gentle pressure and slow orienting movement directly stimulates the vagus nerve. You are sending a direct physical signal to the oldest part of your brain that says, “I’m here. I’m in control. We are safe.”
By consciously signaling safety, you create the biological foundation for a new reality to emerge.
Using simple “body keys” like this is a profound way to slowly retrain your brain. Learning to communicate with your body is the first step, especially since we never received a manual for it.
