Your brain doesn’t simply turn off when you go to sleep. In fact, it enters its most important phase of learning and integration. While you are in deep sleep, your brain produces powerful, high-speed bursts of neural activity known as sleep spindles.
Think of these sleep spindles as your brain’s nightly software update. During the day, you have various experiences and learn new things. Then, at night, these sleep spindles act like the “install” button. They replay the day’s events at high speed, consolidating what’s important into your long-term memory and skills, while also pruning away what is not needed.
A Biological Mechanism for Reality Creation
This nightly process is a biological mechanism for reality creation. Therefore, if you spend your day worrying and focusing on what you don’t want, you’re essentially giving your brain a “worry file” to install overnight. As a result, you will literally get better at worrying.
But if you consciously give your brain a new, empowered feeling state to practice, you are handing it a new piece of software to install. You can wake up with a new skill or a new identity, more deeply wired into your very being.
How to Install a New You Overnight: A Simple Guide
So, before you go to sleep tonight, you have a choice. You can give your brain a new file to install. Here is a simple process to choose and run your new program.
- Choose the New Program. First, decide on the one feeling or state you want to wake up with tomorrow. For example, this could be calm, confidence, or creative flow.
- Mentally Rehearse It. Next, for about three to five minutes, vividly imagine yourself moving through your day tomorrow from that state. Truly feel what it feels like in your body. This conscious rehearsal creates a new memory file for your brain to work with.
- Give It a Command. Finally, as you’re drifting off to sleep, place your hands on your heart and give your brain a clear instruction. You can say something like, “Tonight, my brain’s only job is to install the program of calm confidence. Integrate this feeling into every cell of my being.”
