I used to think a healthy heart was steady like a metronome, but it’s the opposite. This concept of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) completely changed how I manage stress and understand the true rhythm of a healthy heart. Has anyone else used breathwork to consciously change their biology?

What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?
Heart Rate Variability, or HRV, is the measurement of the variation in time between each of your heartbeats. It is the number one biomarker for resilience, longevity, and emotional wellbeing. A high HRV means that your heart rate is very adaptable and variable. This indicates that your nervous system can skillfully shift from stress to calm, much like a race car driver easily changing gears.
Debunking the Metronome Myth of a Healthy Heart
We tend to think that a healthy heart operates like a metronome, maintaining a perfectly steady beat, tick-tock, tick-tock. However, science actually shows the exact opposite of that. The healthiest, most resilient, and adaptable nervous system is not revealed by a steady rhythm, but by something far more dynamic.
The healthiest, most resilient and adaptable nervous system is revealed by a heart rate that is constantly, subtly and beautifully changing its rhythm with every single breath.
In contrast, people with a low HRV tend to get stuck in a state of stress. They get easily overwhelmed by daily challenges and often take a long time to recover from them. Their nervous system lacks the flexibility to adapt effectively.
How to Instantly Improve Your HRV with Breathwork
The incredible news is that you are not stuck with your current HRV. You can consciously and instantly change it by training your nervous system to become more resilient. All it takes is a simple, powerful tool you already possess, your breath. This breathing technique acts as a bridge, bringing your heart and your brain into a state of coherence and promoting a high HRV state.
A Simple 60-Second Coherence Technique
- Focus Your Awareness. Place your hands on your heart. This simple physical touch helps to center your awareness on this part of your body.
- Begin the Breathing Cycle. Start to breathe in a balanced rhythm. Let’s do it together. Breathe in for a count of five (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
- Hold Your Breath. Gently hold your breath at the top of the inhale for a count of five (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
- Exhale Slowly. Now, exhale slowly and completely for a count of five (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
- Visualize and Feel. As you continue this cycle, imagine your breath flowing in and out of your heart center. While breathing intentionally, cultivate the feeling of gratitude and appreciation. Think of a pet, a loved one, or a beautiful memory. Truly feel that positive emotion right in your heart.
- Continue for 60 Seconds. Carry on with this practice for at least one minute to feel the effects.
Taking Conscious Control of Your Biology
When you do this, you take conscious control of your heart rhythm. You have actively shifted your biology from a state of chaos to a state of coherence. It sounds simple, but the real question is, will you remember to do it? All we need to do is actually apply this knowledge. This breathwork is a fantastic first step toward achieving energy mastery.
