Have you ever struggled to reliably distinguish between gut instinct and simple anxiety? It’s a common challenge, but the answer may lie in a fascinating concept I’m exploring. It turns out that your gut is your second brain, and learning to listen to it can be a transformative experience.

Understanding the Enteric Nervous System Your Gut Is Your Second Brain
This incredible system is officially called the enteric nervous system. It is a complex web of over 100 million neurons, which is more than you have in your entire spinal cord. This neural network lines your whole digestive tract, acting as a powerful information processor.
What makes it so remarkable is that this system can operate independently from your head brain. It has the capacity to sense, feel, and even remember. However, this gut brain doesn’t communicate in words. Instead, it “thinks” in feelings.
The Difference Between Gut Feelings and Logic
That sudden sense of “yes” or that deep, profound “oh hell no” you feel when you’re about to make a decision is not just random anxiety. That is your gut brain processing information from your environment and giving you a clear, visceral signal. It is your body’s built-in lie detector, which is why we don’t just call it a “gut feeling” for nothing.
The thing is, we’re taught to ignore it and think logically, but your head brain can be tricked by thoughts based on past conditioning. Your gut brainโฆ it just knows.
A Simple Game to Tune Into Your Gut’s Frequency
Let’s play a game to help you tune into its frequency. First, grab something simple to eat or drink, like a piece of fruit or a glass of water. Anything will work for this exercise.
- Hold the item in your hands before you consume it.
- Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your stomach and your solar plexus area.
- Now, silently ask your gut the question, “Body, is this what you truly want and need right now?”
- Listen to the very first microsecond of response. Do not think about it. Just feel.
What did you notice? Was there a subtle feeling of opening, warmth, or leaning forward? That would be a “yes.” Alternatively, was there a tiny clench, a feeling of coldness, or a sensation of leaning back? That’s a clear “no.” I tried this myself and got a “hell no” because I just had dinner. It really works!
Beyond Food Applying Gut Instinct to Daily Decisions
This simple practice isn’t just about food. You can practice this with small decisions throughout your day. Ask yourself, “Should I send this email now?” or “Should I go to that event tonight?” With each question, you are training yourself to listen to your most primal and honest intelligence source.
This practice is a key step in overall spiritual expansion and personal growth. For those looking to deepen this connection, you can explore events like the Ignite Your 13 Chakra Blueprint, and remember to check the schedule for the next class on the registration page.
Ultimately, your body is a supercomputer. Your head thinks, but your gut always knows. Go ahead and just start the conversation.
