Has anyone else experienced the physical ‘financial freeze’? That sudden heart-drop feeling before you open your banking app is a real physiological response. If this sounds familiar, know that you are not alone. Learning how to begin healing your financial nervous system is the key to moving past this anxiety, and I’ve learned a powerful reframe that’s helping me regulate my nervous system around money.
If you are new to my world, I’m Aela Lee, and I help people heal their financial nervous system so they can stop freezing and start flowing with their finances.

Understanding the Financial Freeze Response
Do you get that heart-drop feeling before you open your banking app? That flash of heat? Thatโs your nervous system slamming on the brakes and going into a freeze response. This happens because it has been conditioned to see that screen as a report card for your self-worth.
Your amygdala, the brain’s tiny smoke detector, can’t tell you the difference between a monster and a credit card bill.
It just senses the perceived emotion you’re avoiding and floods your body with cortisol, preparing you to run or hide. The problem is, you can’t build wealth if you’re constantly hiding from it. This cycle keeps you stuck and makes financial growth feel impossible. But there is a way to change this programming.
A Simple Reframe for Healing Your Financial Nervous System
To break this cycle, we have to give the brain a new job. Instead of reacting from a place of fear, we can consciously choose a different perspective. We are going to reframe the bank account from a scary “report card” to what I call the “giving tray.” Think of it as a place of flow and not judgment. This one simple reframe is a game changer.
This powerful shift moves you from your fear center, the amygdala, into your pre-frontal cortex. This is the part of your brain responsible for gratitude and higher-level thinking. This one shift is the key to your nervous system regulation around money. Here is how you can start implementing this today.
How to Practice the ‘Giving Tray’ Reframe
- Open Your Giving Tray
Take a deep breath and open your banking app or statement. Remember, you are looking at a tray of flow, not a test of your worth. - Find One Expense
Look at your expenses from last week and pick just one. For this example, let’s use your phone bill. - Hold It With Gratitude
Instead of seeing the payment as a loss, hold the transaction with a feeling of gratitude. Say “thank you” for the connection that it gave you, for the business that you could run, or for the family that you could call. - Focus on the Return
Actively feel the gratitude for what you received in return, instead of focusing on what you gave to pay for it. You just took the monster out of the room.
Small reframes like this are incredibly powerful. By seeing what you give as a return to you, you begin taking an effective step in restoring the relationship we have with money. Give it a try.
Honestly, this is the exact kind of deep nervous system work we do in our training events. For instance, in the Break Free From Self-Sabotage class, we literally teach your body on a cellular level how to feel safe and regulated with both incoming and outgoing money. If you’re done with the financial freeze, you can check the schedule for the next class at the link to join us.
