Have you ever had that feeling where your body knows before you do? I recently realized my nervous system was making all my life decisions for me, often before I had a single conscious thought. This subconscious process is called Neuroception, and it’s constantly running in the background, shaping our reality based on perceptions of safety and risk.

What is Neuroception?
Neuroception is your nervous system’s subconscious process of detecting risk and safety. It happens in the oldest parts of your brain, completely bypassing your logical mind. This is precisely why you can feel a sudden, unexplainable sense of unease or a feeling of profound calm around certain people or in certain places.
Your body is picking up on subtle cues like tone of voice, body language, and the energy of a space. It makes a judgment long before you do. Neuroception is an invisible sense, running 24/7 in the background of your awareness. It is constantly scanning your environment and asking one simple question, “Is this safe?”
Before you’ve had a single conscious thought, before you’ve even decided if you like a person or a place, your body has already made its decision.
How Your Body Knows Before You Do and Responds to Risk
If your nervous system has been conditioned by past experiences to perceive risk everywhere, it will keep you in a state of fight or flight. This constant state of high alert can lead to sabotaging opportunities for connection, love, and abundance because your body’s system deems them unsafe.
Therefore, to change your life, you must first change what your body perceives as safe. You have to learn how to speak its language. When you feel that unexplained anxiety, your body has detected a threat. Your job is to step in as the conscious leader and signal back that you are safe.
A Simple Practice to Signal Safety
Here is a simple and effective practice you can do to communicate safety directly to your nervous system. This gentle exercise helps stimulate the vagus nerve, which is the main highway of the body’s safety system.
- Gently place your right hand on the left side of your neck. Let your palm be soft.
- Turn your head slowly to the right, as if you’re looking over your shoulder.
- Hold this position for about 30 seconds, remembering to breathe slowly.
- Come back to the center and then repeat on the other side. Place your left hand on the right side of your neck and turn your head slowly to the left.
This gentle pressure and slow orienting movement sends a direct physical signal to the oldest part of your brain that says, “I’m here. I’m in control. We are safe.”
