In this different take on thyroid issues and chronic low energy, we explore the idea that your thyroid isn’t broken, it’s protecting you. If your energy feels low and your body feels heavy, or things just seem slower than they used to, your body might not be working against you. Instead, it might be responding to something it learned a very long time ago as a protective response from your nervous system.

The Thyroid’s Deeper Role Beyond the Physical
Most people look at the thyroid just as a simple physical gland. And yes, it plays a very real and important role in the regulation of your metabolism, your energy levels, and your body’s overall pace. It is a critical component of your endocrine system.
But it also sits right in the center of your throat. Your throat is not just a physical space; it’s the center of expression. It is where you speak, where you communicate, where you say yes, and where you say no. This energetic connection is often overlooked.
How Suppressed Expression Can Impact Your System
Now, think about this for a moment. How many times in your life were you told to stay quiet, not to speak up, or to not be emotional? How often were you encouraged to not say the thing you actually wanted to say in order to keep the peace, instead of telling your truth?
Over time, your system learns something from these experiences. It learns that expression might not feel safe. So, instead of speaking, it holds. Instead of expressing, it contains. The body is always listening, not just to what you say, but also to what you don’t say.
Why Your Thyroid Isn’t Broken, It’s Protecting You
This is not about blaming yourself, and it’s not about saying that a thyroid condition is solely caused by this. However, this framework explores how the body may respond when expression is consistently held back. This perspective offers a new way to understand your body’s wisdom.
When that suppression happens over time, the system can begin to slow down. This isn’t a failure but a form of regulation. It is a powerful way of conserving energy and a method of maintaining safety in a system that has learned that expression can be dangerous. The shift, therefore, is not “How do I force my body to speed up?” It becomes, “What would it feel like for my system to experience safety in expression?”
A Simple Practice for Safety in Expression
Here’s something simple you can try to begin creating that sense of safety in your body and throat.
- Gently place your fingers on the side of your throat. Use no pressure, just light contact.
- Then, take a deep breath in.
- As you exhale, let out a soft hum. Just like this, “hmmmmmm.”
- Allow yourself to feel the vibration under your fingers. Let it be subtle. Let it be slow.
- From there, you can open the sound into a vowel. So, on the next exhale, go, “Ahhhhhh.”
You’re not trying to fix anything with this exercise. You are simply allowing your system to experience vibration, movement, and expression in a gentle way. From there, start to notice small things in your life… a place where you might hold back your voice… and gently begin to allow a little more honesty there, at your own pace.
Healing Through Safety and Expression
Your body responds to safety. When expression begins to feel safe again, your system can begin to reorganize in a very different and more vital way. It’s a journey of gently re-teaching your body that it is safe to be heard.
