Your Happiness Rules Are Completely Made Up

Have you ever had the thought that your happiness rules are completely made up? I just realized that for 99% of the things we experience in life, the value we place on them… the meaning, fulfillment, joy, or even dissatisfaction… is something we invent. We create these rules for ourselves, and the most incredible part is that we have the power to change them at any moment.

Why Your Happiness Rules Are Completely Made Up

For the vast majority of our life experiences, the value we assign is entirely subjective. We are the ones who decide, “I like this,” or “I don’t like this,” and then we structure our lives around these self-imposed rules. But the strange and wonderful truth is, these rules are not set in stone. We can rewrite them.

A Simple Example of Changing Tastes

Think about this. Have you ever had a food that you despised as a child, only to try it again as an adult and discover that you actually enjoy it? Many of us have had this exact experience. For me, there was one specific dish my mom used to make that I absolutely hated.

Because I disliked it so much, she stopped making it for years. Then, much later, I visited my older sister, and she was preparing the exact same recipe, which she loved. I questioned her, “Oh, you’re making that thing I didn’t like as a kid. Why?”

She simply said, “You really ought to just try it again. You were six years old when you decided you didn’t like it. Just try it again.” And she was right. It was actually delicious. I have no idea why I disliked it back then.

The Arbitrary Nature of Meaning

The point is that our preferences are often assigned to things randomly or based on a single past experience. We attach a certain meaning to it, and that meaning is entirely fabricated. This applies to everything, not just food.

For example, some people find profound meaning in things that others might see as trivial, like watching the latest Netflix show or following who won a sports game. On the other hand, some of us derive satisfaction from pursuits that are, in the grand scheme, equally “meaningless,” such as diving into explorations of consciousness, energy, and vibration.

Yes, I did just call all of my work meaningless. Equally, all of those things are meaningful to the people that choose it to be meaningful.

Ultimately, the source of meaning is a personal choice. Whether it’s a TV show, a sports team, or the nature of reality itself, something becomes meaningful only when you decide it is. For those drawn to deeper explorations of energy mastery and personal growth, there are many resources available to help ignite your spiritual expansion. You get to define what matters, and you can change that definition whenever you choose.
