Has anyone else realized their perfectionism was actually a neurological and spiritual block disguised as a high standard? Many of us are taught to strive for perfection, but what if that very striving is what’s holding us back? It’s time to explore the fascinating neuroscience behind your brain on perfectionism vs. presence. You may discover that perfectionism isn’t a standard to achieve but a neurological barrier that prevents you from truly connecting to the universe.

The Neurological Barrier of Perfectionism
To understand the impact of perfectionism, we first need to look at our brain during states of deep connection, such as meditation. Neuroscientists have found that during these moments of oneness, activity in the parietal lobes significantly quiets down. This is a crucial part of your brain because it orients you in space and time. Essentially, it creates the perceived boundary between “you” and “everything else.”
When this area is highly active, you feel separate. This sense of separation gives rise to a distinct self that you feel needs to be constantly defended, improved, and perfected. This is precisely where the inner critic lives and thrives. When you are stuck in a state of perfectionism, your parietal lobe is hyperactive, reinforcing that feeling of separation and judgment.
Understanding Your Brain on Perfectionism vs. Presence
So, what happens when you shift from perfectionism to presence? When you enter a state of allowance, letting yourself know and feel that you are already good enough, something incredible happens neurologically. That boundary created by the parietal lobe begins to dissolve. As this brain region goes quiet, you stop experiencing yourself as a separate, isolated self. Instead, you merge with the natural flow of life.
Perfectionism is literally a perceived block in your crown chakra. By the way. All blocks are just perceptions. None of them actually exist. It is literally the refusal to dissolve into oneness that you are because you are too busy judging the self.
A Simple Practice to Shift from Perfectionism to Presence
The good news is that you can manually quiet this part of your brain and expand your senses to cultivate presence. It’s a simple practice that you can do anywhere. Instead of focusing narrowly on a specific task or a perceived flaw, intentionally widen your awareness with the following steps.
- Widen Your Gaze Look at the furthest point in the room you can see.
- Soften Your Eyes Allow your vision to blur slightly. Let go of the need to see everything with sharp clarity.
- Expand Your Sensation Instead of just feeling your skin, try to feel the air touching your skin. Ask yourself, “Where does the air end and where do I begin?”
- Whisper an Affirmation Gently say to yourself, “I’m not the performance. I am the presence.”
As you do this, feel the edges of yourself fully soften. The relief you feel is the sensation of your crown chakra opening. This simple shift in focus reminds you of a profound truth’ you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be present.
