If you’ve ever struggled with high or low blood pressure, my perspective on blood pressure might change how you understand what your body is doing. My view shifted when I stopped seeing it as just physical and started understanding it as a nervous system response. Most people see blood pressure as only a physical issue, and while there are real physiological factors involved, your nervous system and internal state also play a huge role.

What Your Blood Pressure Says About Your Nervous System
At its core, blood pressure is directly connected to how your system handles pressure, both internal and external. When we look at it through this lens, we can begin to see the patterns our body has adopted as a way to cope and survive.
High Blood Pressure: A System in Constant Activation
From a nervous system perspective, high blood pressure is often linked to a system that’s in a state of constant activation. It is like being permanently in the “on” mode without ever fully switching off. This state can manifest in several ways.
- Holding a lot internally, such as suppressed emotions or stress.
- Feeling a constant pressure to perform, manage, or control situations.
- Always being in motion and never allowing for true rest and recovery.
It is like your system is saying, “I have to keep going no matter what.” So the body responds by increasing pressure internally.
Low Blood Pressure: A Collapse or Withdrawal Response
Conversely, low blood pressure often represents a different pattern in the nervous system. Itโs more of a collapse or withdrawal response, where the system disengages rather than pushes through.
This pattern can be connected to:
- Feelings of low energy or depletion.
- Feeling overwhelmed or completely shut down.
- A lack of direction, motivation, or drive.
- The system is not fully engaging with life.
It’s like the body is saying, “I don’t have the energy to push.” So instead of building pressure, it drops.
Healing Is About Safety, Not Force
It is incredibly important to understand that neither of these states are good or bad. They are simply adaptations. Your body is responding to what it has learned and what it feels is safest based on past experiences. Therefore, healing isn’t about forcing the body into a state of perfect balance.
Instead, true healing is about supporting the system to feel safe enough to regulate naturally. For high blood pressure, this means creating more space for release and downregulation. For low blood pressure, the focus is on creating more grounding, stability, and gentle engagement with life.
Ultimately, when the nervous system begins to regulate, the body follows. If this resonated, comment the word “balance” on the video.
