Is our definition of ‘visualization’ completely wrong? Most people think it means seeing a perfect 4K movie playing on the inside of their eyelids. However, this common misconception misses the true power of the practice. The truth is, visualization isn’t seeing, it’s feeling, and you can tap into this power even if you have Aphantasia.

An Exercise in Feeling, Not Seeing
Let’s try a simple exercise to demonstrate what visualization truly is. You don’t even need to close your eyes for this.
- Right now, I want you to think about a lemon. Just a lemon.
- Think about holding it in your hand. Remember the texture of its skin, the little bumps and pores.
- Now, imagine cutting it into thin slices on a wooden cutting board. Think about the sharp, fresh smell.
- Finally, picture yourself picking up one of those thin slices. Bring that slice of lemon up to your mouth and then bite into it.
Take a moment to do that. What just happened in your mouth? You likely had a little salivation, didn’t you? Your jaw might have even clenched slightly.
Did you have to see a perfect crystal clear image of that lemon before your body reacted? No.
You accessed the frequency of a lemon. You remembered the experience of it, and your nervous system responded as if it were real.
Why Visualization Isn’t Seeing, It’s Feeling
This simple experiment reveals a profound truth. Visualization isn’t about seeing; it’s about remembering a feeling. It’s an immersion into a frequency. This is the essence of imagination, which is a form of remembrance. In short, you just visualized a lemon with your salivary glands.
Your body doesn’t know the difference between a past memory, like the lemon, or a future memory. To your nervous system, it’s all just frequency. So, the next time you hear someone say, “visualize your higher self” or “visualize your dream life,” and your mind protests, “I can’t see it,” just stop trying to see.
How to Practice Feeling Your Vision
That resistance is just your logical mind kicking in. Instead of forcing an image, ask yourself a different set of questions. What does it feel like?
- What does that version of you feel like in your chest?
- What does peace feel like?
- What does wholeness feel like?
- What does certainty feel like in your body?
Let the feeling be your vision first. Access that frequency. That is the memory you are here to remember.
Allow yourself to practice immersions like this daily. For example, think about how it feels to put your hands into hot water or what it feels like to stir the water with your hand. You don’t need to force an image. You just need to feel the truth.
