Have you ever tried using your own voice through humming or chanting to tune your nervous system with your voice and calm anxiety? We all understand that a musical instrument, like a cello, needs to be tuned to create a beautiful sound. If a string is too loose, the entire instrument will sound dissonant or off. In the same way, your body is the most sophisticated instrument ever created, and your nervous system can be knocked out of tune by the stresses of daily life, leaving you feeling emotionally dissonant, anxious, and unsettled.

Your Voice is Your Built-In Tuning Mechanism
The incredible thing is that you have a built-in tuning mechanism that you can use anytime and anywhere. That powerful tool is your own voice. The simple act of creating a sustained vibrational sound, such as humming or chanting, is one of the most effective ways to tune your own instrument. It directly communicates with your body on a primal, vibrational level.
The body speaks through vibrational sensations and toning is how you can speak back in its own native language.
How Humming Calms the Vagus Nerve
This powerful calming effect is possible because of the vagus nerve, which is the master nerve of your parasympathetic, or “rest and digest,” nervous system. This nerve has extensive connections to your vocal chords and larynx. Therefore, when you hum, you create a gentle vibration that acts as a direct signal to your vagus nerve. This signal tells it to relax and gently shifts your entire system into a state of deep calm and coherence.
A Simple Guide to Tune Your Nervous System With Your Voice
Are you ready to tune your instrument right now? This simple exercise takes only a few moments and can be done anywhere. Follow these steps to use your voice to bring your body back into harmony.
- Sit comfortably, and when you’re ready, go ahead and close your eyes.
- Take a deep breath in. As you exhale, begin a low, gentle hum, like this. Hmmmmm.
- As you are humming, bring your awareness to your stomach. Feel the vibration there for one full breath.
- On the next breath, move that awareness and the feeling of the vibration up into your chest, into your heart space. Really feel your sternum resonate.
- On the final breath, move the vibration up into your throat and then to the center of your head. Feel the gentle resonance in your skull.
Well done. You just used your own voice to calm your nervous system, harmonize your energy centers, and bring your entire instrument back into tune.
