I’ve found that almost every overwhelmed entrepreneur is addicted to complexity because it makes them feel special. Adopting this simple perspective will change how you scale your business and finally help you break the cycle of overwhelm. In every moment, you face a very simple choice between the complex perspective and the simple perspective. Nine times out of ten, simplicity wins because it’s far easier to show up consistently for a simple approach than a complex one.

The Entrepreneur’s Addiction to Complexity
Let’s apply this idea to building a business. For some reason, most entrepreneurs love to make things way more complicated than they need to be. It’s almost like they get a little buzz when things are complex in their business. This complication often gives them a false sense of self-worth, as if having a super-special, complicated situation makes them unique.
With every single client I work with, I hear the same story. They say, “Oh, but this won’t work because of this special thing, and my business is different because I do things this way.” When we dig into it, all of those complexities generally stem from a deep-seated need to feel special.
How This Simple Perspective Will Change How You Scale Your Business
Once we work through the programming that creates that need for specialness, we can get back to the authentic, raw, and real purpose of why they started their business in the first place. Suddenly, it all gets really simple. In truth, their purpose doesn’t need those complexities. It just needs a few simple, key components to thrive.
When we start focusing on those key simple components, everything begins to move forward. All at once, the overwhelm begins to fade. The things that make you question, doubt, and feel like you don’t have the capacity or the knowledge to execute your mission suddenly fade away. You’re left with tasks that actually feel possible.
Focus on the Three Things That Truly Matter
You are left with things that you can execute on. Things that are so simple, you might even ask, “Is that really all I need to do? Just show up to these three things every single day?” One of the most important lessons I’ve discovered from building businesses for two decades is that the activities that move you toward your goal are generally just three things.
If you have 10 things on your task list, probably only three of them matter. And there’s a good chance you’re missing a couple of the ones that actually do. Most likely it’s only one of the things on your task list that matter, and two other things that you haven’t even thought of because you’ve made it too complicated.
