Stop Building Your Website. Do This Instead.

I ran a web design agency for over 15 years, and I’m telling you to stop building your website. There is one specific distraction that keeps most entrepreneurs busy doing things that don’t actually move their business forward. If you’re ready to focus on what truly brings results, you need to hear this instead.

The Self-Sabotage of Staying “Busy”

As conscious individuals, we work to master our energetics so we can stay on track with what brings the results we’re looking for. However, entrepreneurs often keep themselves busy doing all kinds of things they think will move their business forward. In reality, they are often leaving out the most important parts due to a self-sabotage program.

This program might sound something like, “I need to keep busy in order to be worthy,” or “My worth is tied to my output.” Consequently, they stay busy grinding, hustling, pushing, and chasing. They might complete another launch, build a website, or set up a new system, all in avoidance of the true value they have to offer.

Why You Must Stop Building Your Website (And What to Do Instead)

I hear this constantly from nearly every young entrepreneur I speak with. They’ll say, “I’ll be ready to launch just as soon as I finish up the last pieces of my website.” Or, “I’m almost ready, I just need to put together this one more thing on a landing page, and then I’ll be ready to launch.”

But here’s the thing, and I can say this because I built websites for over 15 years running a marketing and web design agency. What most entrepreneurs don’t realize is that your website does not equal sales.

I don’t care how cool it is. I don’t care how much color psychology you put into it or how much you pay a copywriter. Your website is not the key.

The Three Core Parts of Any Business

There are only three essential parts of a business. Everything else is a distraction.

  1. Create Value: This is the product or service that you’re offering.
  2. Communicate Value: You must communicate that value to the people who need it in a way that allows them to take action.
  3. Exchange Value: This is where they click the button to buy or complete the transaction.

Most entrepreneurs get this wrong. They try to put the website in the place of communicating value to their clients. The problem is, websites suck at communicating your value.

The Real Key to Marketing: Building Relationships

I said it. Coming from a background of 15-plus years in web design, websites suck at communicating value because they don’t cultivate and build a relationship. True communication of value, or true marketing, happens when you build a relationship between you and your potential clients.

You cannot effectively facilitate this on a website, especially if you’re a young business just getting started. It can work at scale, when your product is well fleshed out and your market is extremely well-defined. But most entrepreneurs have not yet built the depth of relationship with their audience needed to truly understand their language and build a website that represents it.

When I finally understood this, I started directing my web design clients away from building a website. Instead, we would do extensive work to understand their audience by building real client success. We worked with their clients in-depth to gain a true picture of their inner world. Only then did we build the website. By that point, the business was already doing $20k, $50k, or even $100k a month before we ever thought about a website, because it’s about the relationship.

Authenticity Outperforms Fancy Websites

If you can cultivate the relationship between you and your potential clients, you will outperform anybody that spends $10,000 on a website. You will also outperform all of the AI-generated websites out there today. As websites become increasingly easy to create, anyone can spin one up and look like they have a great business. Because of this, people inherently don’t trust websites anymore.

Trust is built through a real relationship, not through a fancy landing page.

The simplest, most boring landing pages, or even just a Calendly link in your bio, can outperform a ton of information on a website. Why? Because it allows a relationship to be built. In today’s world with all the AI fluff content, it is becoming more and more important that you build a real relationship with your clients. Drop the fancy logos and put your face up there. Drop the scripted words and show up as who you are. Toss out all the branding and marketing, and just be you. Build a relationship and learn to effectively communicate your value, and you will go farther than any strategy could ever take you.

Break the Loop and Focus on What Matters

So many entrepreneurs keep themselves busy because of that subconscious program that says, “My worth is tied to my output.” This leaves them constantly reworking a website or some other aspect of their business. They are constantly launching and relaunching, never actually allowing themselves to be truly seen. Their throat chakra remains closed, their solar plexus hidden, and the light within their heart is unable to connect to the clients they’re meant to serve.

If you’ve found yourself running in a loop, keeping busy with a whole bunch of stuff but not building relationships, it’s time for a change. If you’re stuck in a cycle of chasing, launching, collapsing, and then wondering what went wrong, you are not alone. If you’re ready to get focused on what actually matters and cut out all the distractions, you can make the inner shift within yourself. It’s time to become hyper-focused on the results you can bring for your clients by building impactful, effective relationships.
