The Subtle Trap of “My” Problems

You already know that you can architect a life that you love, and you have been diligently doing the inner work. Whether it’s shadow work, inner child healing, or processing trauma, you have been uncovering and shedding layer after layer. Now, you are ready to fully step into a new way of being.

To make that change stick, you must shift your identity. This begins with the story you tell yourself, particularly how you use the words “I” and “my.”

Think about it. Anytime you say something like, “my situation is this,” “my past is this,” “my problem is this,” “my struggle is this,” or “my trauma is this,” you are claiming ownership. The words that follow “my” actively define you in that moment. You are tethering your identity to the very things you wish to overcome.

How to Reclaim Your Power With This Simple Word Shift

The solution is a simple but profound adjustment in your language. This isn’t about avoidance or spiritual bypassing. You still need to think about and work through the challenges you face. Ignoring them won’t move you forward. Instead, the trick is to change your relationship with them.

Take the word my out of it, stop claiming it as yours. It’s just something that’s there.

Instead of saying “my problem,” refer to it as “the problem.” Instead of “my struggle,” speak of “the struggle.” This small change creates a massive energetic separation. The challenge is no longer part of your identity; it is simply an external situation that exists. It’s something that has been part of your life, but it does not define who you are.

Define Your Future, Not Your Past

While you release ownership of past and present challenges, you must simultaneously take ownership of the future you are creating. This is where the word “my” becomes your greatest ally. Project the future identity you are choosing by consciously using “my” to describe what’s next.

Notice the difference in these statements:

  • “My path forward is…”
  • “My choice is to do this…”
  • “My next steps are going to be…”

By doing this, you release your identity from what has been and what is, and you anchor it into the reality you are choosing to create. You take full ownership of your future story.

Anchor This Shift Into Your Timeline

To make this practice stick, I encourage you to anchor it into your body, timeline, and mindset right now. Declare your intention in the comments by writing the words, “My choice is…” and follow it up with what you are choosing for yourself.

I look forward to seeing what you create. For those looking for more resources to support your journey, you can explore the various tools available within the Etayowa Community platform.
