It’s All Made Up. That’s Your Superpower.

My perspective on ‘reality’ shifted when I realized it’s all just a story we tell ourselves. This realization can be either terrifying or the ultimate source of freedom, because if it’s all made up, that’s your superpower.

The Fabric of Our Reality

The freedom comes in knowing a couple of things. First and foremost, it’s all made up. All the stories everybody tells themselves are completely made up. Everything that anybody thinks they want is made up. If they are passionate about something, they made up that passion somewhere along the line, or it got made for them by their circumstances in life.

This applies to everything. If someone is super skilled at something, they made that up. If they’re excited about something, they made that up. Conversely, if they live in depression with a story about how “woe is me” and life sucks, they made that up too. Maybe life helped them make that up, and it was made up for them. But either way, it’s all a construct.

It’s All Made Up. That’s Your Superpower.

This truth can be a double-edged sword. On one side, you say this to the wrong person, and it doesn’t help them at all. In fact, it can screw them up really, really bad, and they might lose their composure. They can’t handle the reality that we make it up and the fact that that is empowerment, that you can do something powerful with that knowledge. For some people, hearing this leads to the question, “So what’s the point?”

However, other people hear this and have a completely different reaction. They think, “Okay. It’s all made up. I get to make it up then.” And they go and write a new story for themselves. The crucial question is, which one are you? Which one do you want to be?

The Challenge of Rewriting Your Story

To truly embrace this freedom, we have to be able to rewrite the story, and we have to be able to change our identity. But we get really personal with our identity and our story. The story frames our identity; our identity is, well, who we believe we are. So if we just try to burn that and create a new one, there’s this visceral threat response our nervous system comes up with.

If we try to change the story, the nervous system can say, “Whoa, whoa, no. No. No. No. That can’t happen because that doesn’t fit the formulated identity.” This internal resistance is where many people get stuck. If you find yourself wanting to write a new narrative but feel trapped by these deep-seated patterns, it can be helpful to explore new ways to break free from self-sabotage.
