Understanding Your Brain’s Algorithm

Think about how social media works. Whatever you click on, watch, or emotionally react to, you begin to see more of. This isn’t random; it’s amplification. The surprising part is that your brain works in the exact same way. Neuroscience calls this selective attention, using the reticular activating system and perceptual filtering.

But what does this mean in real life? Essentially, you are not experiencing reality as it truly is. Instead, you are experiencing the version of reality that your nervous system has been trained to notice.

The Danger of a Negatively Tuned Algorithm

If you consistently focus on stress, whatโ€™s missing, what feels unfair, or whatโ€™s wrong, those neural pathways strengthen. As a result, your brain gets better at finding more of that. This doesn’t happen because the world is getting worse, but because your internal algorithm is tuned to detect threats. This is a survival mechanism; it’s efficient, and it will keep proving your focus right.

It’s just like when you click on one dramatic headline and suddenly your entire social media feed is filled with chaos. If you emotionally “click” on stress every day, your brain will dutifully serve you more stressful experiences to notice.

How to Retrain Your Internal Algorithm Intentionally

So, how do we retrain it? The answer is not to force positivity or pretend that everything is perfect. You retrain your brain by intentionally tagging what deserves amplification.

When you pause and notice something supportive, you are signaling to your brain, “This matters. Surface more of this.” Over time, this simple practice shifts your focus. You can start by noticing things like:

  • A stable moment in your day
  • A small win or accomplishment
  • A kind interaction with someone
  • The feeling of a calm breath

Gradually, your nervous system starts scanning for safety instead of constantly scanning for danger. This process eventually becomes automatic.

This Isn’t Mindset, It’s Neural Conditioning

This practice goes beyond simple “mindset work.” It is active neural conditioning. If you want more support in your life, you have to start by noticing the support that already exists. Similarly, if you want more stability, you have to train your nervous system to recognize and value moments of stability.
