If you have fibromyalgia, this might change how you understand what your body is doing. My perspective on fibromyalgia changed when I stopped seeing it as just pain and started seeing it as the body’s protective mechanism. When you understand what that means energetically, it shifts everything. This new viewpoint suggests that fibromyalgia isn’t just pain, it’s your body protecting you from what it perceives as a threat.

Understanding Fibromyalgia Beyond Widespread Pain
Fibromyalgia is most often described by its symptoms, which include widespread pain, chronic fatigue, and heightened sensitivity. However, to truly understand it, we need to look underneath these surface-level experiences. From both a nervous system and an energetic perspective, something much deeper is happening within the body.
At its core, your system is in a state of constant overactivation. It is always scanning for threats, always bracing for impact, and always holding tension. This isn’t a conscious choice but rather an automatic, adaptive response from a system that feels fundamentally unsafe.
Your system is in a state of constant overactivation. Always scanning, always bracing, always holding.
The Energetic Roots of Overactivation
When we look at this state of high alert from an energetic standpoint, a few key areas of the body are usually involved. These energy centers, or chakras, can become contracted or blocked, contributing to the physical symptoms experienced. The primary areas involved include:
- The Root Chakra: This center governs your sense of safety and security. If your system does not feel safe, whether due to past trauma or current stressors, the body remains on high alert.
- The Solar Plexus Chakra: This is your center of personal power, control, and identity. When there is pressure, a feeling of over-responsibility, or internal tension, this area can stay perpetually contracted.
- The Heart and Throat Chakras: For many people with fibromyalgia, these areas hold a great deal of unexpressed emotion. This can include things left unsaid, feelings that were never processed, and energy that has not been given a space to move.
When this energy has nowhere to go, the body holds it instead. Over time, that constant holding manifests as physical pain.
Why Fibromyalgia Isn’t Just Pain, It’s Your Body Protecting You
Now, this is an important distinction. Recognizing the emotional and energetic components does not mean the pain is “just emotional,” and it certainly doesn’t mean you caused it. It means your body, in its incredible wisdom, adapted to a stressful environment. It created a protective pattern to help you survive.
That holding becomes pain. It doesn’t mean you caused it. It means your body adapted to protect you.
Therefore, the path forward isn’t about fighting the body or forcing the pain to go away. That approach often creates more tension and reinforces the feeling of being unsafe. True healing begins with a different approach.
Healing Through Safety and Regulation
Healing is about helping your system feel safe enough to finally stop holding on so tightly. It’s about shifting from a state of threat to a state of peace. This is where nervous system regulation becomes essential. Itโs not about forcing a release or pushing for rapid healing, but about gently creating the space where your body can finally shift on its own terms.
When safety increases, the system naturally begins to reorganize itself. The constant bracing can soften, the held energy can start to move, and the pain can begin to subside. This is where lasting change becomes possible, as you work with your body instead of against it.
