The ‘Shirt & Pants’ Analogy to Change Your Perceptions, Change Your Reality
Let’s imagine your life as an outfit. The world you’re currently living in, your external circumstances, and your day-to-day experience… that’s your shirt. Now, think about your pants. Your pants represent your perceptions, the internal dialogue in your head that shapes how you see everything.
Imagine that your reality, the world you’re living in, that’s your current shirt. Imagine that your pants are your perceptions, the thing that’s in your head…
The Two Legs of Perception
Your “pants” have two legs, each representing a different set of beliefs.
- The Left Leg: This is the perception you have of yourself. It’s the inner voice that might tell you, “I am not strong enough,” “I’m not confident enough,” or “I don’t have what it takes.”
- The Right Leg: This is the perception you have of the world. These are the beliefs that say, “The world is scary,” “There aren’t enough opportunities,” or “Nobody will listen to me.”
How to Change Your Outfit (And Your Timeline)
So, what if you don’t like your current outfit? If you’re wearing a shirt and pants that don’t feel right, you wouldn’t just keep them on. You’d change them. The first step is deciding what kind of shirt and pants you actually want to wear. What reality and what perceptions do you desire?
Next, you must take off the old shirt and pants. This can be a vulnerable process. It’s like being in a changing room with a floor-to-ceiling mirror, where you have to look at yourself fully. You might see things that bring up self-doubt or make you question past choices. But you have to be okay with this momentary discomfort to make a change.
Then, you put on the new pants, one leg at a time. You start by changing the perception you have of yourself (the left leg) or the perception you have of the world (the right leg). It doesn’t matter which one you change first, because when you intentionally shift one, the other naturally begins to change as well.
Once you’ve changed your pants… your perceptions… you can put on the new shirt. The reality that matches your new perceptions will naturally follow. It truly is that simple.
Stepping Into Your New Reality
When you change the perception you have of yourself and the world, you are walking into a different reality. And you aren’t doing it naked and afraid; you’re doing it feeling good because you’ve fundamentally changed how you see yourself and the world around you.
