Here is a perspective shift that can change how you handle anxiety. What if you understood that anxiety isn’t real, it’s your brain’s prediction of a future that hasn’t happened yet? The key is that your body believes this predicted future is real and is already happening. This isn’t about calming down a random feeling; it’s about understanding a powerful internal process.

Understanding Why Anxiety Isn’t Random
If you’ve ever felt that familiar tightness of anxiety in your chest, stomach, or throat, you’ve likely been told it’s just something you need to calm down. However, anxiety isn’t a random malfunction. It is a purposeful prediction. Your brain is constantly running simulations of the future in an effort to keep you safe from potential harm.
Anxiety isn’t actually anxiety. It’s your brain trying to predict a future that hasn’t happened, and your body is believing it already did.
When your brain detects uncertainty or a potential threat in the future, it diligently fills in the gaps with worst-case scenarios. This is your amygdala, the brain’s alarm system, simply doing its job. It’s a survival mechanism designed to prepare you for anything that might go wrong.
Anxiety Isn’t Real, It’s Your Brain’s Prediction Manifesting Physically
Now, here is where it gets interesting and where the physical sensations come from. Your body does not know the difference between a real, tangible event and a vividly imagined one. Therefore, when your brain predicts a stressful future scenario, your body responds as if it is already happening in this very moment.
This is why your heart rate increases, your breath becomes shallow, and your muscles tighten. Itโs not because something is fundamentally wrong with you, but because your entire system is preparing for a perceived threat. Energetically, this tension often sits between the solar plexus and your third eye chakra, signifying an attempt to control the future without feeling safe and grounded in the present.
A Grounding Technique to Reclaim the Present
So, when you feel that wave of anxiety begin to rise, you can shift your focus away from the imagined future and back into the safety of the present moment. Instead of fighting the thoughts, ground your body. Try this simple but powerful exercise.
- Look around your current space and name 3 things you can physically see.
- Bring your awareness to your body and name 2 things you can physically feel (like the chair beneath you or the texture of your clothing).
- Listen carefully to your environment and name 1 sound you can hear.
After completing this, press your feet firmly into the ground and say to yourself, “I am right here, right now. I am safe.” This affirmation helps anchor your consciousness in the present reality.
Because anxiety lives in the future, regulation happens in the present.
If you have been trying to fix your anxiety with your mind alone, this is likely why it hasn’t worked. You must bring your body back to the present moment where it can feel secure.
