Have you ever found yourself on the verge of a major breakthrough, only to inexplicably pull the plug at the last second? This is the classic signature of debilitating self-sabotage. It’s a frustratingly common cycle, and understanding the twisted logic of self-sabotage is the first step to breaking free. It’s not about fighting a part of yourself, but about understanding the surprisingly logical reason we self-sabotage and why that old approach simply doesn’t work.

An All-Too-Familiar Cycle
I used to be the world’s worst self-sabotager, and recently, I watched someone go through this same painful cycle. It’s one of the saddest things you’ll ever see. A person shows up to a class on moving through cycles of self-sabotage, ready to break those deeply ingrained patterns. They feel ready to go deeper and schedule a one-on-one session to do the deep nervous system work necessary for a lasting shift.
Then, the day before the session, they reschedule for a few days later. Just 45 minutes before the new appointment, they cancel it entirely. The note they send explains they’re in a “flaky energy” and a “big self-sabotage cycle,” so they need to delay until they’ve worked through the pattern a bit more. The irony is staggering.
The Twisted Logic Of Self Sabotage
The entire purpose of the session was to break the cycle of self-sabotage. Yet, someone deeply stuck in it will convince themselves with a logic that sounds something like this:
“This is a session that will help me break out of my cycle of self-sabotage. But I’m feeling very stuck in a cycle of self-sabotage, so I’m not ready to do the session that will help me break out. So let me sit here in the cycle, sabotage myself out of the session, and wait until I’ve worked through my self-sabotage a bit better before I do the session that will actually help me.”
To the person stuck in this loop, and I used to be this person, that line of thinking makes complete, undeniable sense, even though it’s complete gibberish. It’s a layered, multifaceted, and sometimes very logical-sounding excuse to stay exactly where you are.
The Real Reason We Hit the Brakes
This happens because there isn’t a boogeyman inside of you that wants you to fail. It’s not a part of you that wants things to go wrong. Instead, it’s the part of you that doesn’t know if it will be able to exist on the other side of the cycle. When you’re about to do the very thing that will shift the pattern, a part of you panics.
The part that knows the self-sabotage loop so well asks, “Wait a second. I don’t know if I can live there. I don’t know if I’m going to be needed there. What if I don’t have a purpose on the other side of this?” In that moment of fear, it hits the brakes. It comes up with a beautiful story about how you need to work on your pattern a bit more before you’re worthy or ready to do the thing that can help you exit the pattern.
This is why self-sabotage feels darn near inescapable for most people. It masks itself under stories that sound completely valid to the person experiencing them. And while those stories are valid, we must look deeper to see the real reason a part of you wants to stay in the old pattern and the value it believes it’s gaining from it.
Creating Safety to Finally Move Forward
The key is to create a safe enough container within yourself. You need to finally show the part of yourself that is so terrified of the unknown that it will survive, that it can move forward, and that it can join you in living in freedom. This is the work I help my clients do. We create a space where every part of themselves, even the self-sabotaging part, feels safe enough and trusts that there is enough love and support for it to step forward.
We won’t try to kill off the self-sabotage pattern because we recognize its job has been to keep you safe. Instead, we support it in coming with you into a life you love. Every part of you is deserving and is a part of the whole. We are here to work in whole systems, and that means never alienating any part of yourself.
The whole self-sabotage thing only exists because there’s a part of you that thinks if you go to where you want to go, it will get left behind.
This work is about showing that part that it can’t be left behind because it is integral to the whole you. To live a life you love, to feel whole, happy, and full, you must bring every part of yourself with you, including the part that’s been running the self-sabotage program.
