If you constantly feel tired but wired at the same time, you are not just experiencing burnout. This feeling is a clear sign that your body’s threat response is stuck in the ‘on’ position. Understanding why you’re tired but wired & how to signal safety to your body is the first step toward finding true rest. It’s not about a lack of motivation; it’s about a nervous system that needs a new signal.

Understanding Your Body’s Threat Response System
Your adrenal glands, which sit right on top of your kidneys, are a core part of your body’s threat response system. They are specifically designed to activate when something isn’t safe. When your system detects a threat, these glands release cortisol and adrenaline to help you respond effectively. This is a completely normal and necessary biological function.
However, the problem arises because your body was designed for short-term, acute threats, not the chronic stressors many of us experience every single day. Modern life presents constant pressures such as work deadlines, financial worries, relationship stress, and uncertainty about the future. These are not the fleeting dangers our bodies evolved to handle.
Consequently, instead of switching on and then off, your system stays perpetually on. Your body keeps receiving the same message over and over again, it’s not safe. As a result, your root and your foundation never have a chance to fully settle. Your adrenals just keep going day after day until you eventually feel the cumulative effect.
Why You’re Tired But Wired & How to Signal Safety to Your Body
That wired but exhausted feeling, that inability to fully rest, and that nagging sense that your system just won’t slow down are direct results of this overactive state. It is crucial to understand that this is not a personal failing or a lack of motivation.
That’s a body that hasn’t felt safe in a long time.
Instead of trying to push through it, the solution is to start giving your body a different signal. You can begin to consciously and physically communicate safety to your nervous system. Here is a simple but powerful exercise you can do right now.
A Simple Exercise to Soothe Your Adrenals
- Start by rubbing your hands together briskly until they feel warm.
- Place your warm hands on your lower back, right over your kidneys.
- Lean back slightly into your hands and allow yourself to truly feel that support.
- Go ahead and close your eyes. Begin to take slow, deep breaths in.
- As you breathe, imagine that your breath is moving all the way down into your hands.
- As you exhale, allow yourself to let out a low, gentle hum. Let your body feel the vibration move through your entire system.
- Repeat this process for at least five to seven breath cycles.
The Goal Is a New Signal, Not a Forced Change
It’s important to remember that you’re not trying to force any change with this exercise. You are not fighting against your body’s response. What you are doing is simply letting your system register something new and different. You are introducing the gentle, somatic feeling of “I’m safe, I can slow down.”
Over time, with consistent practice, this simple act of self-soothing changes how your body responds to stress. It teaches your nervous system that it can return to a state of calm and rest.
