I used to think I was ‘too spiritual’ for small talk, but then I realized why Costco is just as sacred as a temple, and it changed everything. This shift in perspective helps us understand that the ultimate goal of spiritual awakening isn’t to escape life, but to fully enjoy it, to be who we choose to be, and to find depth in every single moment, whether we’re talking about a Netflix series or meditating in a pyramid.

The Illusion of ‘Surface-Level’ Conversations
At the highest level of spiritual awakening, the goal is simple. It is to enjoy life. Some people choose to enjoy a good Netflix series. Others choose to enjoy sports. And some, like many of us, choose to enjoy spirituality and depth. But here is the secret, it’s all equally deep when we begin to see it as equally valuable.
This realization has helped me tremendously. I often find myself in situations with what I used to call “surface-level” conversations that didn’t feel nourishing. I found it hard to engage. But in those moments, the only person I was disserving was myself, because I wasn’t allowing myself to connect with another real, genuine human being.
When we label things as deep spiritual or surface level, meaningful or not meaningful, we are creating separation where Source doesn’t. We are imposing a hierarchy that doesn’t exist in reality.
It’s About Preference, Not Depth
The truth is, it’s not about surface level versus depth; it’s about preference. My preference is this. Their preference is that. And that is perfectly fine. What if, when we find ourselves in the same space, I genuinely take an interest in their preference? Or I allow them to take an interest in mine, without judging one as higher or lower than the other?
When we can see our interests as simply a preference versus a level of depth, all at once, all conversations become a container for profound connection.
Why Costco Is Just as Sacred as a Temple
Think about the idea of sacred sites. People associate places like a temple, the pyramids, or ancient ruins with a special, sacred energy. We might say, “This is a sacred place.” But this creates the same separation.
If you think that standing in Costco is a less sacred place than standing in some giant temple, you are not allowing yourself to connect to Source. You are not allowing yourself to truly understand what “sacred” means.
Sacred is present, sacred is everywhere. We are the sacred, and every place is as sacred as we choose to allow it to be.
Try this. Start going to the market considering it a sacred place. Start meeting everybody considering it a sacred connection. You might be surprised by how meaningful a random conversation can be and the depth of joy you’ll experience.
The Disservice of Spiritual Egotism
I know many spiritual people who hate going to the mall or the grocery store. They feel it’s some “3D thing” that is beneath their evolved spiritual level, a lesser vibration. I’m sorry, but we all have to eat. In the 21st century, that sometimes means going to a store to buy food.
It might be objectively weird to get our food from a big square box of concrete instead of picking it from a field, but it is all part of creation. The disconnection only happens when we say, “This is less than, and something else is more than.” We create a separation of good versus bad.
When we make these “lesser” experiences unspiritual, they become unfulfilling and dissatisfying. They become something we rush through just to get it over with. In doing so, we do a disservice to ourselves. We rob ourselves of the depth that could exist in every moment.
How to Walk in Depth, Always
The point is to walk in the depth, always. Look at everything as carrying the depth that is already there. Meet everyone where they are, with presence, and engage with the thing that is happening in that moment. Have a conversation about their interests with the same level of passion, essence, and connection as you would about your own.
When you learn to see every place and every activity as equally spiritual, you begin to see the magic and the depth. You begin to see the spirit with you and through you. You begin to feel alive. When you can master your energy in any environment, your personal growth accelerates. Ultimately, whether you’re grocery shopping or walking through a temple, it’s all the same. It is all sacred.
