What is Synesthesia? Your Hidden Creative Trait

If you had an immediate and instinctive answer for any of those questions, you might have a touch of a creative superpower called synesthesia. Synesthesia is a neurological trait where stimulating one of your senses triggers an involuntary experience in another. Itโ€™s as if your brain’s wiring has these cool, creative cross-connections that most people don’t consciously access.

People with this trait, known as synesthetes, might see distinct colors when they hear music, taste words, or feel specific shapes when they eat certain foods. Many famous creatives, including Pharrell Williams, Lorde, and even Vincent van Gogh, were all thought to have it. For them, they didn’t just write a song; they effectively painted it with sound.

How to Unlock Your Creative Superpower by ‘Scrambling’ Your Senses

But here is the secret. While only about 4% of people experience this full-time, we all possess the capacity to forge these connections. By doing so, you can access the creative genius it unlocks. This technique is a powerful “body key” for blasting through creative blocks by intentionally scrambling your senses and moving beyond your logical mind.

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

  1. First, grab a notebook to jot down your thoughts, or simply do this exercise in your head. Whatever works best for you.
  2. Next, pick an abstract concept you want to explore. For example, you could choose “my goal” or “the feeling of peace.”
  3. Finally, run that concept through your five senses. Ask yourself the weird questions below and write down the very first thing that pops into your head. It is important to do this with no judgment.

Probing Questions for Your Senses

Let’s use the abstract concept of “peace” as an example. Ask yourself the following questions and notice what sensory information comes to mind.

  • Color: If peace was a color, what would it be? A soft blue, or maybe a warm red?
  • Smell: If peace had a smell, what would it smell like? For example, like rain on warm pavement.
  • Taste: If peace had a taste, what would it taste like? Perhaps a cool mint tea.
  • Sound: If peace had a sound, what would it sound like? Would it be a low, vibrational hum or simply silence with no words?
  • Touch: If you could touch peace, what would its texture be? For example, would it feel smooth like a cool stone?
