Many people wonder why you grind your teeth, often assuming stress is the sole culprit. But what if the answer is deeper? My teeth grinding stopped when I realized it was my subconscious avoiding a major life decision. The truth is, grinding your teeth at night isn’t just about stress; it’s a powerful signal from your subconscious that you are refusing to make an important decision. Here’s the energetic explanation for this common issue.

The Energetic Reason Why You Grind Your Teeth
While dentists call it bruxism and typically attribute it to stress, it’s essential to look at the energetic function of the action itself. Chewing is the physical act of analyzing a problem. Itโs about breaking things down so they can be digested, both physically and energetically. Biting down, on the other hand, is the definitive act of making a decision.
When you grind your teeth at night, your subconscious is caught in a loop of indecision. You are endlessly chewing on the same problem, turning it over and over again. However, you never actually “swallow,” which represents acceptance, and you never “bite through,” which signifies making a final decision. Your jaw is stuck in a state of perpetual processing without resolution.
The Chakra Conflict Behind Indecision
This physical tension is a direct manifestation of an energetic conflict between two of your core energy centers. The conflict is between your root chakra, which governs your sense of safety and security, and your throat chakra, which is responsible for your self-expression and truth.
Your root chakra is afraid of the change that the impending decision will bring. It fears the unknown and wants to maintain the status quo for a feeling of security. Because of this fear, your jaw works overtime, trying to break down a problem that simply cannot be solved by more thinking. The resistance to change creates a physical and energetic stalemate.
You are wearing down your enamel because you won’t wear down your resistance.
A Simple Exercise to Stop Grinding Your Teeth
To break this cycle, you must consciously give your jaw permission to rest before you sleep. This simple exercise can help release the built-up tension and signal to your subconscious that it’s safe to let go. Follow these steps as you lie down in bed.
- Stretch and Relax Your Jaw: Open your mouth as wide as you comfortably can, stretching the jaw muscles. Then, let it hang completely slack and relaxed.
- Position Your Tongue: Gently touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. This is a natural resting position that discourages clenching.
- Identify the Decision: Mentally identify the specific decision you have been avoiding. Acknowledge it without judgment.
- Set an Intention: Say silently to your subconscious, “I choose to trust myself to make this decision with ease.” This affirms your capability and reduces the perceived threat.
- Visualize Release: Finally, visualize unhooking a heavy weight from your jaw muscles. Picture it dropping away, taking all the tension and pressure with it. Feel the lightness and relief.
Clarity Over Grinding
Performing simple exercises like this can create the biggest shifts because the universe operates on micro-decisions. Your body doesn’t need to grind away at a problem all night; it just needs clarity and permission to move forward. By allowing yourself to communicate with your body, you can resolve the underlying conflict and find peace.
