Why You Get a Lump in Your Throat

Have you ever wondered why you get a lump in your throat when holding back strong emotions? That tight, choking sensation is more than just a feeling. It turns out, the ‘lump in your throat’ is a physical muscle spasm designed to stop you from speaking your truth. Many people experience this as a powerful throat chakra blockage. Let’s decode the language of your biology to understand what is truly happening.

The Biological Reason Why You Get a Lump in Your Throat

That tight choking sensation is medically known as Globus pharyngis. Biologically, when you are under acute stress or holding back a strong emotion like sadness, your sympathetic nervous system activates. This system is responsible for your “fight or flight” response. As part of this, it constricts the muscles in your throat to keep your airways wide open, preparing your body for action.

However, at the very same time, your conscious mind is often trying to do the opposite. You might be trying to swallow down tears or hold back words you desperately want to say. This creates a physical tug of war within the cricopharyngeus muscle in your throat. The “lump” you feel is the physical tension resulting from this internal battle between your body’s desire to express and your mind’s effort to suppress.

The Energetic Meaning: A Throat Chakra Blockage

From an energetic perspective, this physical phenomenon is a clear sign of the throat chakra slamming shut. It serves as the physical manifestation of a deeply held belief that says, “It is not safe to let this out.” When you suppress your truth, whether it’s words, tears, or another form of expression, you are quite literally interfering with your own energetic flow.

You are literally choking on your own energy.

How to Manually Signal Safety and Release the Tension

The good news is that you can consciously and manually signal safety to this constricted muscle to help it relax. This simple exercise can provide immediate relief by letting your body know that the internal battle is over and that it is safe to express yourself. Follow these steps carefully.

  1. Gently place your hand on the front of your neck.
  2. Tuck your chin slightly down to soften the muscles in the area.
  3. Now, take a small sip of water or simply do a dry swallow. As you swallow, intentionally drop your shoulders to release any built-up tension.
  4. As you do this, say intentionally to yourself, “I’m safe to express. I don’t need to hold it in.”
  5. Repeat this entire process about three times.

By performing this exercise, you are consciously telling that muscle that the war is over. You are reassuring your nervous system that there is no immediate threat, allowing the muscle to relax and the sensation of the lump to dissolve.
