Have you ever explored the energetic link between asthma, breathing issues, and a deep-seated feeling that it’s not safe to take up space? The sensation of “I can’t breathe” is often the body’s way of communicating a much deeper truth: “I can’t be me.” This connection reveals how our physical well-being is intrinsically tied to our energetic and emotional state.

The Energetic Meaning Behind Breathing Difficulties
While the lungs are known as the organs of grief, they are also the organs of inspiration, which is literally the act of “taking in spirit.” From a biological standpoint, asthma is the constriction of the airways. Energetically, however, it represents something more profound. It is a constriction of your fundamental right to exist.
Biologically asthma is the constriction of the airways energetically. It is a constriction of your right to exist.
This condition can be a physical manifestation of the limiting belief that it is not safe to take up space or to take in life fully. This often leads to a subconscious need to keep oneself small. The body, in its innocent attempt to protect you, closes the doors to the outside world simply because it feels overwhelming.
Childhood Origins of Feeling Unsafe
Very often, this pattern begins in childhood. If a child’s environment felt overwhelming or suffocating, the only way to feel safe was to minimize their presence, their breath, and their life force. An interesting pattern is also seen in babies who are born early or on an unexpected date.
They frequently develop asthma, specifically because of the feeling of an “unexpected arrival.” The subtle overwhelm that can come from the mother or the surrounding family… through no one’s fault… can imprint on the baby’s nervous system. This is why we often see these issues arise early in life.
A Simple Exercise Because It’s Safe To Take Up Space Now
To heal the energetic root of this, you must show your nervous system that the environment is now safe enough to inhale fully. This simple exercise can retrain your biological boundaries and can even be done with your kids from a very early age. Here is what you do.
- Go stand in a doorway and place your hands on the door frame at shoulder height.
- Gently lean forward, focusing on opening your chest. This posture physically helps the protective armor around your heart to open.
- As you lean, take a slow, deep breath into the sides of your ribs.
- While you inhale, silently say to yourself, “I’m safe to take up space. I’m safe to inspire.“
- Hold the breath for about three seconds, and then exhale fully.
A Technique for Babies and Children
When it comes to babies, a parent can help entrain their nervous system to feel safe. You can have your baby lie on your chest while you take expansive, deep breaths with the same intentions. This co-regulation helps their system learn what safety feels like in the body.
Your breath is your direct connection to source, and it is one of the few things we can completely regulate ourselves. Take five minutes each day to simply take deep breaths or perform the exercise mentioned above. Allow yourself to fully take up space. I hope this helps.
Committing just five minutes each day to these practices can create profound shifts.
