Your Thoughts Don’t Create Your Reality

Many spiritual teachings say that your thoughts create your reality, but what if that isn’t the complete picture? This post explores a different take on the ‘thoughts create reality’ concept, suggesting that it’s actually our perception that’s in the driver’s seat of our experience. What if your thoughts don’t create your reality but are simply indicators of something much deeper?

The Metaphor of Floating Thought Bubbles

You know how you always see thoughts drawn as little cloud bubbles in illustrations? Think of thoughts like that for a second. Imagine an infinite number of these little thought bubbles floating all around in the world, around you, and throughout your consciousness.

They are just floating around out here, constantly coming in and out of your brain. A few little thought bubbles come in, your brain processes them, and then it formulates a new thought that goes out. But here is the essential key to understanding this process.

Why Your Thoughts Don’t Create Your Reality

Your perceptions are what determine which thought bubbles are allowed to come in and out of your awareness. In other words, your perception is what truly creates your reality. You can only experience a reality that can fit within the container of your perception. Similarly, you can only have a thought that can fit within what you’re currently capable of perceiving.

Thoughts as Your Internal Dashboard

So, when you’re having a thought, whether it’s positive or negative, it’s crucial not to judge it. The thought itself is simply an indicator. Think of your thoughts like the little warning lights on the dashboard of your car.

If you experience a negative thought, it’s just a little warning light telling you that your perceptions are aligned in a negative direction. Conversely, if it’s a positive thought, it’s a green light showing you that your perceptions are aligned in a positive direction. Your emotions fall into this same category; they are also indicators of where your senses and perceptions are aligned.

How to Shift Your Perceptions (and Reality)

Rather than trying to force yourself to have better or more positive thoughts, it is more effective to evaluate a bit deeper. You can start by asking yourself a few fundamental questions:

  • What are the fundamental things that I am choosing to perceive about myself?
  • What is the construct I currently believe about the world?

After reflecting on these, you can then consciously choose what you would like that construct to become. When you start doing this inner work, you can change the very structure of your perceptions. As a result, your thoughts will shift very easily in the direction you want them to go, and you will see a corresponding shift in your reality.

Your perception chooses the reality that you can experience. The thoughts are just indicators.

From Battling Thoughts to Conscious Creation

So, stop trying to battle against negative thoughts. Instead, when they pop up, simply ask yourself, “What am I actually choosing to create here?” Dive deeper. Formulate a clear structure for what you actually desire to create. Then, you can align your perceptions to see where those experiences and possibilities can exist right now and how they can come into your reality quickly and easily.
