Has anyone else felt grief as a physical inability to breathe? I’m exploring the idea that it gets ‘stuck’ in our lungs, and it’s a profound truth many of us experience. If that feeling is familiar, it’s time to learn how you can breathe again and release old grief that may be physically holding you back.

The Weight of Uncried Grief in Your Lungs
That inability to take a deep, satisfying breath isn’t just a physical limitation of your lungs. It is often uncried grief, physically occupying the space where air should be. This is a profound truth rooted in how our energy body connects to our physical body.
Your heart chakra governs your lungs, and the job of the lungs is to be the organ of exchange. They receive inspiration and spirit, and they release what is old and no longer serves you. In essence, they are the physical manifestation of our relationship with life itself. We explore this connection between your chakras and physical well-being more deeply within the Ignite Your 13 Chakra Blueprint event.
How Grief Physically Occupies Your Body
Grief is heavy. It is dense, especially when you don’t process it. When you swallow the sob, when you try to “stay strong” and refuse to cry, that dense, heavy, uncried grief does not simply go away. Instead, it compresses and settles right in your lungs. It can physically occupy the alveoli, those tiny little air sacs where life force should be flowing freely.
That feeling of “I can’t get enough air,” that shortness of breath, that is your body literally telling you, “I have no more room for life. I am full of old sadness.”
Conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or even that chronic “smoker’s cough” in someone who has never smoked can be signs of this. It is your body desperately trying to cough up the energetic density of unsung grief. To heal, you must create space for it to be released.
A Simple Exercise to Breathe Again and Release Old Grief
Here is a simple but powerful “body key” exercise you can do to help you create that space and move the old energy out. Follow these steps when you are by yourself and can give yourself the space to truly feel.
- Stand up and wrap your arms around yourself like you’re giving yourself a really tight hug. Squeeze yourself and hold yourself with love.
- As you inhale, open your arms wide, expand your chest, and look up. Physically open yourself up to receive new energy and life.
- As you exhale, come back in, wrap your arms around yourself again, and squeeze. As you do, let out a deep, audible sigh or sound like “ahhhh.” Let the energy move.
- Repeat this process. Inhale and open up again, consciously allowing yourself to receive.
The Power of Allowing Tears
Remember, you are physically moving the old grief out and creating space to let life back in. During this process, it is vital to allow yourself to cry. Just allow it. Crying is one of the most effective ways to move stagnant energy from the body.
Give yourself permission and the space to let the tears flow without judgment. Allow this for yourself. So go try it. Good luck.
