The idea that our brains are hardwired for mystical experiences, as suggested by the controversial ‘God Helmet’ experiment, offers a profound new perspective on spirituality. This research raises a fascinating question about our very nature. Are we all just walking antennas, equipped with your brain’s built-in spiritual antenna, waiting to be tuned in?

The ‘God Helmet’ Experiment
In the 1980s, a neuroscientist named Michael Persinger developed a device that became known as the God Helmet. This helmet generated a weak, complex magnetic field around the wearer’s head, specifically targeting the temporal lobes of the brain. The results of his experiments were astounding.
Up to 80% of participants reported having profound mystical experiences. They described a “sensed presence” in the room, as if someone else was there. Others felt a sense of being light, saw deceased relatives, or even felt the presence of God. Many experienced out-of-body sensations and a feeling of deep connection to the universe.
What this controversial experiment suggested is that spiritual experience isn’t just a fantasy. It may be a latent biological function hardwired into our brains.
Harnessing Your Brain’s Built-In Spiritual Antenna
This suggests that your temporal lobes, the parts of your brain just above your ears, may act as a sensitive antenna. They seem capable of perceiving frequencies and fields of information that exist beyond our five primary senses. In our noisy, chaotic modern world, this subtle antenna is often drowned out. The static of our overthinking minds and the stress of our daily lives can easily interfere with the signal.
However, the capacity to connect, to receive, and to experience something greater than ourselves is not lost. It is a dormant piece of our own technology, waiting to be reactivated.
A Simple Practice to Quiet the Static
Here is a simple practice you can use to quiet the mental static and gently activate these sensitive regions of your brain.
- Find a Quiet Space. Sit comfortably where you will not be disturbed.
- Locate Your Temples. Take your two middle fingers and find the soft spots on your temples.
- Begin Tapping. Close your eyes and begin to tap very gently and slowly. Alternate between the left and right temples in a slow, rhythmic pattern.
- Breathe and Hum. As you continue tapping, take a deep breath in. On the exhale, create a humming sound like “hmmmmmm.” Feel the gentle vibration resonate through your skull.
- Set Your Intention. While tapping and humming, hold the intention, “I am opening my awareness to receive.” Continue this entire process for about 60 seconds.
- Rest in Silence. When you’re finished, stop tapping and sit in silence for a moment. Simply notice the quality of your inner space.
Unifying Your Conscious and Subconscious Mind
Using frequency is an incredible way to quiet the logical mind. With this practice, you are gently knocking on the door of your brain’s higher perceptual centers. You are signaling to your own internal antenna that you are ready to listen.
Adding somatic practices like this helps you create a bridge between your subconscious and your conscious mind. Essentially, we want to unify the two. When this unification becomes natural, your perception of reality shifts into a very deep understanding.
