Has anyone else realized their acid reflux or heartburn was directly tied to unprocessed anger and anxiety? You’re not alone, and it’s crucial to understand that your heartburn is an emotional message from your body. That burn in your chest, that acid reflux, is not just about the food that you ate. Pay attention, because your body is trying to send you a message.

The Deeper Meaning of Acid Reflux
Yes, medically, it’s called GERD. This means stomach acid is literally flowing up your esophagus, and it burns. That’s the what, but I’m always interested in the why and what it’s really communicating through the body.
Your stomach is the seat of digesting life. It’s your power center, your solar plexus. Think about this. When you are swallowing experiences that are hard to stomach, or when you’re holding onto undigested anger, acidic anxiety, or repressed frustration, your body physically mirrors your emotional state by overproducing acid.
That burning you feel in your chest is not just acid. That’s the physical manifestation of burning with repressed anger. It’s an emotional fire.
Your body is literally screaming. What acidic thoughts are you swallowing? What are you angry about that you’re not digesting?
An Alkaline Breathing Technique to Cool the Fire
So next time you feel that fire rising, don’t just pop a pill. I want you to try this simple technique instead. It is called alkaline breathing.
- Put one hand right on your stomach, which is your solar plexus.
- Breathe in normally, but as you exhale, purse your lips and let the air out slowly. Pursed-lip breathing can help manage acid reflux by promoting relaxation and also by improving diaphragmatic function.
- As you do this, visualize a beautiful, cool, silvery-white light pouring down your throat, into your chest, and into your stomach. Visualize it neutralizing all the acidic energy.
- Literally feel it cooling the fire. Visualize the vibration of cooling in the stomach and also in the breath.
- Do this for about 60 seconds, or longer if you feel you need to. If the feeling keeps coming up, keep visualizing.
Why Your Heartburn is an Emotional Message You Shouldn’t Ignore
There is another part to this practice. I want you to make a conscious choice alongside the breathing exercise. Say this softly in your mind or out loud, whichever works for you.
I choose to digest all of my experiences with peace and ease. I allow all acidic anger and fear to receive all the love and support to remember its original wholeness. I fill my body with the cooling frequency of peace.
You can pause and write this down if you need to, but remember, it is a practice. It is a practice to embody that peaceful energy instead of holding onto anger, allowing it to flow instead.
Use Your Heartburn as a Trigger for Peace
Use the heartburn as your trigger. It’s your new alarm clock to practice peace. In this way, it is a literal gift. This whole cycle of swallowing your anger until it literally burns you from the inside out is a classic, devastating pattern of self-sabotage.
Yes, I’m calling it out. Your body is trying to get you to break the loop and come into your perfect, whole, self-healing state of being. That is what it’s communicating. That’s why it brings this feeling up.
